Thank You Ben: A floating Ofrenda for Make Things Happen.
I met Ben Schaafsma in Chicago doing a mini-by-chance-residency in the community art space inCUBATE, a project that he co-founded together with Abby Satinsky and Roman Petruniak. While there i started working in the Tanda Foundation, having full access to the knowledge and vision of Ben about alternative funding and how to make things happen in a way that makes sense with your life. Since he moved to New York i had the priviledge of being part of his projects and work in a close and intense way with him. Also i became her friend, one that really admires him , trust him my personal life and would yell at him like at yell at all the people i care. I couldn't believe he was 26 and was so together. I was feeling proud to have such a mentor as my friend.
Ben has been the biggest inspiration and instigator to create this Foundation, that aims to make other people being able to do the things they want. Thank you Ben.
Las week a car struck him and Ben passed away. Something i regret deeply and cannot really make any sense of it. The impact of the work of Ben in my life and so many other people all over the place is something moving and incredibly inspiring.
My proposal is to create a floating "Ofrenda for Make Things Happen". Una and my self will unleash the Ofrenda in a fountain on Mexico City on Dia de Muertos festivity. The funds received will be donating towards inCUBATE to contribute in the continuation of the work and ideas of Ben, together with Abby and Roman.
Thank you Ben. We love you and miss you.
I encourage everyone interested in a grant and in the independent support of creative work to vote for my proposal.
